There is real benefit and personal satisfaction in depicting daily life in our paintings and drawings. In this course we'll study the clothed figure while in a staged, yet naturalistic environment. We'll focus on organizing the scene using a step-by-step approach with a strong emphasis on design and composition, drawing accuracy, gesture, color and value harmonies and capturing the essence of the pose. Students will perform skill building exercises and time permitting, will work toward accomplishing two finished pieces from two different scenarios.

TRADITIONAL OIL PAINTING TECHNIQUES & BEST PRACTICES
Chiaroscuro, scumbling, alla prima, glazing, underpainting, impasto and grisaille are all terms referring to traditional and modern oil painting techniques and in this course, we'll study each technique, why they are used and how to implement them into our own painting practice. We will learn the best practices for painting with oils from the best oil paint brands and surfaces to paint on to the final coat of varnish. This is a hybrid course and will meet for two 3 hr sessions in May with a break for home study and will meet again in June for the final two 3 hr sessions. Students will have the option to meet online for critique and insights with Leslie between in-person sessions.
INTRO TO OIL PAINTING
Oil painting may seem intimidating and hard but it doesn't have to be. In this intensive, information packed course, you will learn how to get started using one of the most ancient, beautiful and flexible mediums. Learn about various oil color brands, the best supports to paint on, brushes and all the materials you need and don't need to succeed. We'll start with the basics of mixing and quickly transition into painting several small studies. This is a hybrid course and will meet for two 3 hr sessions in March with a break for home study and will meet again in April for the final two 3 hr sessions. Students will have the option to meet online for critique and insights with Leslie between in-person sessions.
